Nissan And San Diego Get Plug-In Ready

One of the main reasons that fossil fuel-powered vehicles are going to remain a fact of life for many years to come is that fact that the supporting infrastructure of gas stations is already in place to make their use more convenient.  The lack of a viable infrastructure for plug-in vehicles (aside from traditional hom electrical outlets) and fueling stations for hydrogen-powered vehicles mean that even if these vehicles become common in dealer showrooms, many areas won’t have access to the resources necessary to keep these vehicles going.  Japanese automaker Nissan and the city of San Diego are teaming up to rectify that problem and get the city plug-in ready.

Plug-in vehicles are currently capable of being charged off of a 110-volt or 220-volt outlet from your average house (the 110-volt outlet is a regular plug, while the 220-volt is used on bigger appliances like clothes dryers), but the process usually takes awhile.  Depending on the size of the car’s battery pack, charging can take up to 20 hours, and this just isn’t practical when compared with a five minute gas tank fill up.

The city of San Diego’s efforts, led by San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) and private investors, will focus on creating a viable infrastructure of charging stations that will drastically reduce power up times.  Nissan will be supplying a test fleet of zero-emissions vehicles for use by the local government and municiple authorities.  The vehicle will be delivered starting in 2010 and will be capable of a 100 mile range per charge, and the company plans on making it available for public sale by 2012.
